Changes introduced by Solicitor Regulation Authority
W.e.f. 1st September, 2008

Solicitor Regulation Authority (SRA) has finally changed the experience requirement w.e.f. 1st September, 2008. These changes will affect the candidates where Certificate of Eligibility from SRA is received on or after 1st September, 2008.

  • The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is fundamentally reviewing the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Regulations (QLTR).
  • Pending completion of this review, the SRA has decided to introduce revised guidance to transferees, which amends the current experience requirement.
  • The new guidance requires candidates to demonstrate that, of the minimum of two years’ experience of working in a common law jurisdiction, at least one year must have been gained by practicing the law of England and Wales. The new guidance will apply to all applications for a certificate of eligibility received on or after 1 September 2008.
  • Until 1 September 2008, the SRA will continue to accept applications under the current guidance, which does not include the requirement to have practiced the law of England and Wales.
